Filtrete MPR vs MERV: what the numbers mean
MPR (Microparticle Performance Rating) is 3M Filtrete’s own rating scale. MERV (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value) is the ASHRAE 52.2 / EPA scale used across brands. They are not the same number. Use 3M’s published comparison chart as a shopping map, then always trust the MERV printed on that SKU’s box — package labeling can vary by product line and year. Quick answer
- MPR ≠ MERV — a Filtrete “MPR 1000” is not “MERV 1000.” Compare MERV to MERV when you can.
- Common Filtrete labeling on this site — MPR 1000 packs are commonly labeled ≈ MERV 11 (Allergen Defense); MPR 1900 / 2200 packs are commonly labeled ≈ MERV 13. That matches 3M’s comparison chart pairs below.
- Trust the box — newer Filtrete cleaner-air pages and some catalog PDFs print different MERV numbers for similar MPR grades (for example MPR 1000 with MERV 10, or MPR 2200 / 2500 with MERV 14). The print on the package you buy wins.
- Home Depot FPR is a third scale. Do not mix FPR, MPR, and MERV as if they were interchangeable.

What MPR and MERV measure
MPR is Filtrete’s Microparticle Performance Rating. 3M describes it as indicating ability to capture tiny particles between about 0.3 and 1 micron in size — a brand scale for comparing Filtrete models to each other.
MERV is the industry Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value from ASHRAE Standard 52.2. The U.S. EPA publishes average capture-efficiency bands by particle size for ratings such as MERV 8, 11, and 13. Higher MERV generally means finer capture in those test bands — and can mean higher airflow resistance. Confirm your fan and filter slot can take the rating you buy. 3M Filtrete MPR ↔ MERV comparison chart
Pairs below come from 3M’s public “MPR vs MERV” comparison PDF (Filtrete). Treat them as a shopping map, not a guarantee that every retail SKU with that MPR prints that MERV.
| Filtrete MPR | MERV on 3M comparison chart | Shopping note (this site) |
|---|---|---|
| 300 | MERV 5 | Entry Filtrete band on the 3M chart |
| 600 | MERV 7 | Dust / basic household band on the 3M chart |
| 1000 | MERV 11 | Commonly labeled ≈ MERV 11 (Allergen Defense) on packs we cite; some newer Filtrete pages list MERV 10 — check the box |
| 1200 | MERV 11 | Odor-oriented Filtrete line on the 3M chart (still MERV 11 on that PDF) |
| 1500 | MERV 12 | Between common “11” and “13” retail talk — verify the printed MERV |
| 1900 | MERV 13 | Commonly labeled ≈ MERV 13 on packs we cite on MERV 13 size pages |
| 2200 | MERV 13 | Same 3M PDF maps 2200 → MERV 13; some catalog PDFs / cleaner-air pages list MERV 14 — trust that SKU’s box |
| 2500 | MERV 14 | On the 3M comparison PDF; confirm fan/slot can take higher resistance |
| 2800 | MERV 14 | On the 3M comparison PDF; same box-print caveat |
1085 and other odd MPR prints: if a pack is not on this chart, read the MERV (or “equivalent”) language on that box — we do not invent capture percentages here.
Why package MERV can disagree with the chart
3M’s comparison PDF is one published map. Filtrete’s U.S. cleaner-air / product pages and retailer catalog sheets sometimes print different MERV numbers next to similar MPR grades (examples called out above: MPR 1000 with MERV 10; MPR 2200 or 2500 with MERV 14). That is why this site’s money pages say “commonly labeled ≈ MERV …” and still point you at the size page for the SKU you will buy.
Home Depot’s FPR (Filter Performance Rating) is unrelated branding. If a shelf tag shows FPR only, look for MERV on the carton or manufacturer sheet before comparing to Honeywell, Nordic Pure, or AprilAire MERV rows.
