How to find and identify an FC40R

1. Locate the return grille — large wall or ceiling grate. Turn the system fan off before opening if the grille is hard to hold.
2. Open the grille — latches, clips, or screws. Support the filter so it does not fall into the duct.
3. Look for a top-hat profile — a thin face that seats in the ~1″ grille with several inches of media hanging into the duct. That is the FC40R class, not a flush 1″ panel.
4. Read the model on the frame — FC40R1003 (20×20×3) or FC40R1011 (20×25×3) when printed. If the print is gone, measure W × H × depth of the media body and compare to the size pages.

What NOT to do

• Do not force FC100 / AprilAire 4″–5″ cabinet media into a 1″ grille face.
• Do not substitute a 1″ flat panel (20x20x1, 20x25x1) when the old part is a 3″ top-hat — thickness and seal differ.
• Do not assume a 20x25x2 (~1.75″) fills a 3″ return-grille depth.
