Mini-split / ductless wall cassette air filters

A ductless mini-split indoor unit (wall cassette / wall-mounted head) uses small filters behind the front panel — usually a washable mesh screen, sometimes plus a brand-specific disposable insert. These are not the same product as a central furnace/AC return filter size such as 16x25x1 or 20x25x1. Order or replace by your indoor unit’s model number and owner’s manual, not by a furnace grille SKU.

Mini-split filter vs furnace return filter

• Furnace / central AC return filter — cardboard-framed panel in a wall/ceiling grille or media cabinet (e.g. 16x25x1, AprilAire 210 / 213, Honeywell FC100A1037). Captures dust from ducted circulating air. Guide: all furnace filter sizes.
• Mini-split indoor filter — thin mesh or framed insert inside each wall cassette. Air pulls through that head only. Shape and part number are proprietary by brand and model (Mitsubishi, Fujitsu, LG, Daikin, and others).

Homeowners often search furnace sizes when a ductless head needs cleaning. A 1-inch return filter will not slide into a wall cassette, and “close enough” marketplace titles are not a fit guide. If you also have central ducts, you may maintain both systems — different slots, different parts.

How to find, clean, and replace

1. Power off — turn the indoor unit off and switch off / unplug power (or trip the breaker) before opening the cover. Manufacturer manuals list this first.
2. Open the front panel / intake grille — lift or unlatch per the model diagram. Filters usually sit on the intake side of the coil, not at a distant return grille.
3. Slide out the mesh / frame — primary filters are often two panels (left/right). Note orientation and any tabs before removing.
4. Washable primary mesh — vacuum loose dust, or rinse with water / lukewarm water and mild (neutral) detergent when dirty. Dry completely in the shade before reinstalling. Do not use hot water that can warp plastic, harsh solvents, scrubbing brushes, or direct heat/sun to dry (OEM cautions across Mitsubishi, Daikin, LG, Fujitsu manuals).
5. Optional / specialty inserts — anti-allergy, deodorizing, photocatalytic, “triple,” or PM2.5 layers may be vacuum-only, wash on a longer cadence, or replace on a fixed interval. Some must not be washed. Follow the label for that insert and your model — do not assume every gray rectangle is washable mesh.
6. Reinstall dry filters and close the grille fully — incomplete closing can affect airflow. Mitsubishi help notes operating without filters can cause malfunction; Fujitsu manuals likewise expect filters installed for normal use.

Typical manufacturer cadence (OEM language only)

Cadence varies by brand and model. Use your owner’s manual when it conflicts with generic advice. Language we verified from manufacturer materials (accessed 15 Sep 2026):

• Mitsubishi Electric wall-mounted / EZ Fit-style guidance — clean primary air filters about every 2 weeks; vacuum or rinse, dry in shade. Optional anti-allergy air-cleaning filters often use a longer vacuum/clean interval (e.g. every 3 months) and annual replacement of the insert for best performance — part numbers such as MAC-408FT-E appear in some MSZ manuals (confirm for your series).
• Daikin split indoor manuals — recommend cleaning the washable air filters about every 2 weeks; wash or vacuum, dry in shade. Separate titanium-apatite / Ag-ion / enzyme deodorizing inserts often clean on a longer schedule (e.g. water clean about every 6 months) and replace on multi-year intervals (Daikin examples cite about every 3 years for some deodorizing layers) — order by the part number for your model from the dealer.
• LG wall-mounted RAC guidance — clean the air filter about once every 2 weeks (or more if needed); vacuum / soft brush, wash with lukewarm water and neutral detergent when heavily soiled, dry in shade. Specialty filters (deodorization, micro-dust, triple, etc.) may be vacuum/brush-only or replacement-only — LG notes some are not washable.
• Fujitsu Halcyon operating manuals — clean air filters about once every 2 weeks under normal use; vacuum or wash with mild detergent and warm water, rinse, dry thoroughly in shade before reinstall. Optional air-cleaning inserts (examples in some manuals: UTR-FA13-1 / UTR-FA13-2 families) are purchased separately and replaced when dirty — match the exact component for your indoor model.

We do not invent filter face dimensions or universal SKUs for Mitsubishi / Fujitsu / LG / Daikin mesh screens. Those parts are model-specific. Read the indoor unit nameplate (often on the side or behind the front panel) and the owner’s manual parts list, or ask the brand’s dealer with the full model string.

Common confusion: searching furnace sizes

• Search results for “16x25x1 mini split” usually mix in central-system filters. That size is a furnace return nominal, not a cassette mesh.
• Measuring a dirty mesh with a tape can help you talk to a dealer, but OEM charts still win — many aftermarket packs list only approximate inches.
• If your home has both ductless heads and a furnace, keep two shopping lists: cassette filters by indoor model, and return filters by printed size / MERV your system can handle (how to measure · MERV · how often).

What NOT to do

• Do not force a furnace 1″ filter (or any cardboard return panel) into a wall cassette.
• Do not run the indoor unit with filters missing if the OEM requires them — Mitsubishi help explicitly warns that operating without filters can cause malfunction; other brands expect filters installed for normal operation.
• Do not reinstall soaking-wet filters — dry fully in the shade first.
• Do not wash specialty inserts that the manual marks vacuum-only or replace-only.
• Do not invent dimensions or buy by marketplace title alone when the indoor model and OEM part chart are available.
