20x25x2 air filter: actual size, MERV, and price

A 20x25x2 is a two-inch-class rectangle furnace or AC filter — typically about 1.75 inches thick in the slot. Do not substitute a 20x25x1. Do not mix it up with a 20x25x4. Buy the printed size 20x25x2. The panel is smaller than 20 by 25 by 2 inches. Filtrete, Nordic Pure, Filterbuy, and HDX commonly print 19.5 × 24.5 × 1.75; BestAir’s Home Depot listing prints 19.75 × 24.75 × 1.75.

Actual size by brand

These numbers are copied from manufacturer or merchant product copy, not from a competitor size chart. Thickness is part of the fit: 2-inch racks take ~1¾ inch media, not a ¾ inch 1-inch panel and not a 4-inch cabinet cartridge.

If you currently run the common 19.5 × 24.5 × 1.75 cut (Filtrete, Nordic Pure, Filterbuy, HDX) and switch to BestAir’s 19.75 × 24.75 × 1.75, expect a snugger slide-in. A 20x25x1 (~¾ inch thick) will not fill a 2-inch rack. A 20x25x4 is a different cabinet. Measure the old filter if the slot is tight. Full method: how to measure.

MERV 8 vs 11 vs 13 (facts only)

MERV is ASHRAE 52.2, as summarized by EPA. Higher MERV captures a larger share of smaller particles. It also adds resistance. EPA says to pick at least MERV 13 or as high a rating as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate, and to ask an HVAC technician if you are unsure. A 2-inch MERV 13 is not HEPA. We do not claim health outcomes.

Observed range that day for ordinary pleated 20x25x2: about $9.37–$14.10/filter at MERV 8 in multi-packs, $14.94–$19.99 at MERV 11, $10.12–$14.55 at MERV 12 (Nordic Pure), $13.50–$19.99 at MERV 13, with smaller packs costing more per filter than 12-packs. Honeywell Store had no 20x25x2 SKU (1-inch 20x25x1 pages only). Amazon Basics had no 20x25x2 listing with a printed actual, so that brand is omitted. Target does not stock Filtrete 20x25x2; the Filtrete figure is Amazon’s 4-pack. Home Depot HDX and BestAir product pages were Akamai-blocked, so those pack prices are omitted rather than guessed. Walmart Filtrete pages were not used for prices (prefer Target). Filterbuy.com size-chart pages were not used for dimensions; Target and Amazon Filterbuy product listings print 19.50 × 24.50 × 1.75 on the SKU itself.
