Full answer

A 20x20x2 is a two-inch-class square furnace or AC filter. Buy the printed size 20x20x2. Do not substitute a 20x20x1. The panel is smaller than 20 inches on each face — commonly 19.5 × 19.5 × 1.75. Thickness is part of the fit: 2-inch racks take ~1¾ inch media, not a ¾-inch 20x20x1.

Full answer

Honeywell Store does not list a 20x20x2 furnace filter this check. Their consumer 20×20 line is 20x20x1 (actual 19.75 × 19.75 × 0.75) and 20x20x4 cabinet media. A separate Honeywell FC20R2020 return-grille cartridge is labeled 20×20×2 with published actuals 19-3/4 × 19-3/4 face, 18-1/2 × 18-1/2 media, 2-inch depth — that is not a 19.5 × 19.5 × 1.75 furnace-slot pack. A 20x20x4 is a four-inch cabinet cartridge, not this size.

Actual size by brand

These numbers are copied from manufacturer or merchant product copy, not from a competitor size chart. Thickness is the fit problem on this size: 2-inch actual depth is typically 1.75 inches on ordinary pleated packs. A 20x20x1 will rattle in a 2-inch rack.

If you currently run Filtrete / Nordic Pure / Filterbuy (~19.5 square × 1.75) and switch to BestAir (19.75 square × 1.75), expect a snugger slide-in. A Honeywell FC20R2020 will not drop into a 19.5 × 1.75 furnace slot. Measure the old filter if the slot is tight. Full method: how to measure.

Amazon Basics: no 20x20x2 SKU with a printed actual turned up in this check, so that brand is omitted rather than guessed. Honeywell Store: no 20x20x2 furnace-filter SKU this check.

MERV 8 vs 11 vs 13 (EPA facts)

MERV 8 vs 11 vs 13 (facts only)

MERV is ASHRAE 52.2, as summarized by EPA. Higher MERV captures a larger share of smaller particles. It also adds resistance. EPA says to pick at least MERV 13 or as high a rating as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate, and to ask an HVAC technician if you are unsure. A 2-inch MERV 13 is not HEPA. We do not claim health outcomes.

MERV EPA average capture efficiency (particle size) Typical 20x20x2 use
8 ≥20% of 1.0–3.0 µm; ≥70% of 3.0–10.0 µm Common pleated 2-inch replacement when the manual does not call for higher (Nordic Pure 20x20x2M8; Filterbuy MERV 8; BestAir contractor MERV 8)
11 ≥20% of 0.30–1.0 µm; ≥65% of 1.0–3.0 µm; ≥85% of 3.0–10.0 µm Mid-grade 2-inch pleat (Filtrete MPR 1000 is commonly labeled MERV 11; Filterbuy MERV 11). Nordic Pure’s 2-inch reseller line in this check is MERV 8 / 10 / 12 / 13, not MERV 11
13 ≥50% of 0.30–1.0 µm; ≥85% of 1.0–3.0 µm; ≥90% of 3.0–10.0 µm Higher-efficiency 2-inch; confirm the furnace/air handler can take the extra pressure drop. Not HEPA

Source: U.S. EPA, “What is a MERV rating?”, last updated 14 Jan 2026. Filtrete also prints an MPR number; MPR is 3M’s scale, not MERV. Compare MERV to MERV. Nordic Pure 20x20x2M10 is labeled MERV 10 (price row below); EPA’s table still uses the 8 / 11 / 13 steps shown here.

Amazon rows re-checked 27 Sep 2026 against the live featured-offer buy-box in a headed browser (Buy links now open the exact listing named in each row). Other merchants keep their own stamps.

These are public shelf/cart prices we recorded on 30 Aug 2026. They are not live. Shipping, subscribe-and-save, and store-only deals will move them. Per-filter math is pack price ÷ count, rounded to the cent. Honeywell Store has no 20x20x2 furnace SKU in this table. Nordic Pure 20x20x2 rows are the ~1.75-inch-depth SKU, not Honeywell FC20R return-grille media.

Observed range that day for ordinary pleated 20x20x2 (~1.75-inch depth): about $9/filter at MERV 8 in a 12-pack, $15–$17 at MERV 11 in 4-packs, $13–$16 at MERV 13, with 3-packs costing more per filter than 12-packs on the same Nordic Pure SKU. Amazon Filtrete 12-pack B086FDYHTH showed $120.60 but prints no MERV, so that row is omitted. Amazon Basics has no 20x20x2 SKU in this check. Honeywell Store has no 20x20x2 furnace filter in this check. Nordic Pure Buy buttons go through Awin to nordicpure.com. Factory cart pack prices for listed MERV 8 and MERV 10 and MERV 13 3/12-packs were verified 15 Sep 2026 from nordicpure.com (pick MERV and pack on the factory page).

Where to buy

No ranking. Stock and price change. If the slot is an odd fraction that none of these actual sizes match, measure first — that is not a 20x20x2 SKU. A 20x20x1 is not a substitute. A 20x20x4 is a four-inch cabinet cartridge, not this 1.75-inch pack. Honeywell FC20R2020 is return-grille media, not a 19.5 × 1.75 furnace filter.
