16x25x2 air filter: actual size, MERV, and price

A 16x25x2 is a two-inch-class furnace or AC filter (~1.75 inches actual thickness typically). Buy the printed size 16x25x2. The panel you hold is smaller than that label — usually about 15.5 × 24.5 × 1.75 inches, depending on the brand.

Same panel, swapped axes: 25x16x2. We treat 16x25x2 as the canonical label. Order 16x25x2. Do not substitute a 16x25x1. Do not mix this up with a 16x25x4.

Actual size by brand

These numbers are copied from manufacturer or merchant product copy, not from a competitor size chart. Thickness is part of the fit: 2-inch racks take ~1¾ inch media. A 1-inch (~¾) or 4-inch (~3.6–4.4) panel is a different part.

Honeywell Store had no 16x25x2 SKU when we checked, so that brand is omitted rather than guessed. Filtrete 16x25x2 MPR 700 listings we found printed the nominal 16x25x2 only, not a fractional actual — omitted. Amazon Basics had no 16x25x2 listing that printed an actual size. MERV 8 vs 11 vs 13 (facts only)

MERV is ASHRAE 52.2, as summarized by EPA. Higher MERV captures a larger share of smaller particles. It also adds resistance. EPA says to pick at least MERV 13 or as high a rating as your system fan and filter slot can accommodate, and to ask an HVAC technician if you are unsure. A 2-inch MERV 13 is not HEPA. We do not claim health outcomes.

Observed range that day, ordinary pleated 16x25x2: about $9–$14/filter at MERV 8 in multi-packs (Mann+Hummel 6-pack at the low end; Amazon Nordic Pure 3-pack at the high end), $9.60 at Nordic Pure MERV 10 in a 12-pack, $16–$17 at MERV 11 (Filterbuy 4-pack vs Filtrete 4-pack), $12–$17 at MERV 13 (JB Tools 12-pack vs Target Filterbuy 4-pack). Singles and small packs cost more than 12-packs. Nordic Pure’s own site did not show a price until MERV and pack were selected; the JB Tools figures are a reseller snapshot, not Nordic Pure’s factory cart.
